What are those gray dots?

Look at it for some clues.

They disappeared, didn’t they?

Those gray dots are a result of the Hermann effect. At the intersection, white light floods most of the retina’s receptive field. This causes a strong inhibition which makes the area in the intersection appear gray. Looking directly at it activates fovea that makes the dots disappear
